"A Reader Lives a Thousand Lives" George R.R. Martin

This is my Facebook profile picture. It’s casual and, to be quite frank, is an honest representation of who I am. I don’t wear makeup, my hair usually isn’t done, and no one asks who I wear… I’d probably answer, “Old Navy.”

I am a single mother of 8 year old twins, the lights of my life (also, sometimes, the bane of my existence *please read that with as much love as you can muster*). I’ve taught Language Arts, Writing, and Social Studies for the last 18 years in the Dolton Riverdale SD #148. It’s been a long haul in the classroom and many things that are happening now make the face of education ridiculous and hard to recognize.

I attended the ALA conference two summers ago and it changed my life! Upon entering, I knew that I belonged in the library and not in the classroom. I need a place to encourage a love of reading, not badger the kids with books until they see reading as a punishment.

This one is my Facebook cover. Usually, my kids’ faces are smattered all over the place, but I just love every single thing about this photograph. I’m a GIGANTIC Star Wars nerd and Han Solo was the first man I loved (as an adult, it’s always been Harrison Ford. Always). And, can we take a second to digest the way Carrie Fisher is looking at him?! *SIGH* This is everything. I make no excuses for my kids not being my cover, right now… Once I can peel myself away from this, I’ll put their toothless grins back up there…

This last one is my LinkedIn and Pinterest profile picture. It’s perfectly professional and if I ever finish the novel I’m writing, this may just be the photograph I use for the jacket.

And, just because now I’m feeling bad about not having my kids pictures up… Here they are!

  1. Hi Sarah!
I love the picture of your kids with Santa! How cute!!
I enjoy teaching, but lately I feel that I would be better suited being outside of the classroom like you stated. Things are changing so much in the classroom, and it’s challenging for teachers to wear so many hats. My concern is that many teachers are going to start feeling this and we’ll be left with more individuals wanting to be outside of the classroom than within! Maybe if teachers receive more support, especially technology, they’ll remain in the classroom.
Looking forward to learning with you in this course!

PS-I agree that your LinkedIn photo would make a great one on a book jacket!
